EMDR Therapy
Trauma Therapy: EMDR Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing
EMDR therapy is an evidence-based psychotherapy approach often used to treat trauma-related issues, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD, sexual trauma and more. Developed by psychologist Francine Shapiro in the late 1980s, EMDR has since gained recognition for its effectiveness in addressing various psychological issues beyond trauma such as depression and anxiety.
Understanding EMDR Therapy:
What is EMDR?
o EMDR is based on the idea that traumatic memories can become “stuck” in the brain with the original images, sounds, thoughts, and feelings associated with the event. This can lead to distressing or upsetting symptoms and negative beliefs about oneself.
o The goal of EMDR therapy is to help you process these memories and associated emotions more adaptively, enabling you to integrate these experiences into your overall life story without the disturbance that it once held over you.
Who is EMDR for?
o While EMDR is widely recognized for treating PTSD, it has also been used effectively to address other conditions such as anxiety disorders, depression, phobias, grief, and complicated grief.
o It can be adapted for children, adolescents, and adults who have experienced various types of trauma or distressing life events.
Does EMDR work?
o EMDR therapy is supported by extensive research demonstrating its effectiveness in reducing symptoms of PTSD and other trauma-related disorders.
o It is recommended as a first-line treatment for PTSD by organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and the American Psychiatric Association (APA).
EMDR therapy is a structured, evidence-based approach designed to help individuals process and heal from traumatic experiences and distressing memories. By targeting specific memories and using bilateral stimulation (buzzers held in each hand) to facilitate processing, EMDR aims to reduce emotional distress, modify negative beliefs, and promote adaptive coping strategies.
